It's day 2 of our drive back to Maryland. We enjoyed the rolling hills of Nebraska with lots of corn and soybeans.

We drove through the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument.

We had a delicious dinner with friends at Lied Lodge in Nebraska City. Early this morning, we were awakened by a fierce thunderstorm with hail. Early in today's drive we left the stormy weather behind.

We had lunch beside the Mississippi River at Hanibal before crossing it.

We leave Breckenridge for a night in Denver before we start the drive back to Maryland. I made cinnamon rolls this morning to surprise the niece and nephews in Denver.

One of the activities I allow myself on vacation is working jigsaw puzzles. have done 5 since we arrived in Breckenridge last Saturday evening!

Today was the last hike of our Breckenridge stay. We started at Housier Pass and hiked up to Crystal Lake. The high point is at about 12,000ft. The vistas along what is mostly an old jeep road are spectacular. We had a good view of Mt. Quandary, one of only two of Colorado's 14s that I have climbed.

We drove to Copper Mountain and hiked a portion of the Gore Range Trail. We hiked 7.5 miles with a thousand-foot elevation gain. The scenery was beautiful and we saw some flowers we hadn't seen on our other hikes.

Lazy day today. Here are some shots from the roof deck. The view was much better before the trees got so tall!

Today, we took a hike up the Burro Trail. We came to a cleared area with piles of dead, felled trees. This is a fire break for the city of Breckenridge and a joint project of the Colorado Forestry Department and the National Forest Service. The clear-cut swath was a surprise, but it’s a result of climate change, an attempt to save towns that are surrounded by forest.

That clear area aside, the day was beautiful. I was reminded of our modern Benedicite, a hymn by J. Strother (sand she wrote Mrs. Miniver as well!).

We thank you, Lord of Heaven, for all the joys that greet us, For all that you have given To help us and delight us In earth and sky and seas; The sunlight on the meadows, The rainbow's fleeting wonder, The clouds with cooling shadows, The stars that shine in splendor - We thank you, Lord, for these. For swift and gallant horses, For lambs in pastures springing, For dogs with friendly faces, For birds with music thronging Their chantries in the the trees; For herbs to cool our fever, For flowers of field and garden, For bees among the clover With stolen sweetness laden - We thank you, Lord, for these. For homely dwelling places Where childhood's visions linger, For friends and kindly voices, For bread to stay our hunger And sleep to bring us ease; For zeal and zest of living, For faith and understanding, For words to tell our loving, For hope of peace unending - We thank you Lord for these.

The weather was beautiful for our 4-wheel drive up to see the Ute-Ulay mine above Lake City. Our great nephew Jaden is crazy about rocks!

Tomorrow morning we drive to cooler Breckenridge.

We leave Lake City in the morning for the cooler Breckenridge.
