After a brief stop at a rest area overlooking the Yellowstone River, we drove to the Little Bighorn Battlefield. The layout of the battlefield was not what we expected from what we had learned as children. Of course, the focus of the story has evolved too. It’s another reminder that we don’t learn what we should from the past.
A cavalry hothead named Custer
Thought he was the Indian buster.
Give the devil his due;
He ran into the Sioux
And learned that he didn’t pass muster.
But that’s not the end of the story,
There’s murder and mayhem, it’s gory.
They killed Indians at will,
And we “manage” them still.
And mostly, we’re not even sorry.
