Yesterday we took a short charter flight to see the Abu Simbel temples.

Norman and I have both read the book Empress of the Nile about the effort to save the temples when the Aswan High Dam was built. The temples would be impressive in any location, but knowing about their being relocated makes them all the more fantastic. We were lucky to visit on a day with fewer than usual people. 

It's hard to imagine the scale. In the next to last picture above, you can see a man standing next to the statues at the Temple of Nefertari, the one with the smaller statues!
