Today was a short day for us – Havre to West Glacier, only
about 200 miles. The trees near the RV park in Havre were beautiful, loaded
with white or pink blossoms –
The first part of our drive was through more rolling farm land.
We ate lunch near a memorial for Camp Disappointment, named by Lewis and Clark after they found that the source of a Missouri tributary was not above the 49th parallel (which would have made the Louisiana Purchase even larger).
As US Highway 2 dips around the southern end of Glacier National Park, it follows the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. Its current is strong and swollen by the spring snowmelt.
Most of the park is not yet open, but we could drive along the shore of Lake McDonald to Lake McDonald Lodge. The summer employees have arrived for orientation before the Lodge’s opening later in May.

McDonald is my favorite Glacier Lodge. Did you notice the railroad museum /hotel when you went through Essex?
ReplyDeleteNo, but we go back through on the way to Canada
ReplyDeleteIt is called the Izaak Walton Inn. If open would be a fun place to stop for lunch or dinner.
