Day 7 – Wednesday, May 18, 2022
Today was a pleasant drive along the Yellowhead Highway. The
Yellowhead was named for Yellowhead Pass in the Canadian Rockies. The pass was
named for fur trader and explorer Pierre Bostonais who was said to have yellow
streaks in his hair and was nicknamed “Tete Jaune” (Yellowhead).
The prairie continues and gets greener as we go from Saskatchewan
to Alberta. The highway follows along the Saskatchewan River for the first
section but drifts away by the time we reach Alberta. The red-winged blackbirds
serve as the sentries along the highway’s edge. The many small ponds host a
variety of waterfowl. It seems to be the time of return to the north for Canada
geese. But they share the water with a variety of ducks. We have seen swans
once and pelicans too.
